Our Journey
Our journey to becoming the leading offshore driller began more than a century ago. The Noble Story has been written by exceptional people who consistently demonstrate grit, ingenuity and dedication to the company and their teams. It’s also a story about looking forward: carefully considering strategic decisions, forging new pathways and leading with a steady, confident hand.
Over the last few years, we’ve transformed Noble by strategically adding companies that compounded the strengths and scale of our expertise, experience and assets. Today, Noble is better positioned than any company in the industry to tackle the opportunities of the next century.

1890s
Humble Beginnings
Lloyd Noble was born in 1896 in Ardmore, Chickasaw Nation, the child of a pioneer merchant family.1920s
The First Rig

Seminole Field
With the discovery of the Seminole field in 1926, the largest in Oklahoma reaching nearly 527,000 barrels a day, the Company’s growth soared.1930s
The Start of Something New
After acquiring 38 rigs, Noble and Olson decided to go their separate ways in 1930.
When dividing assets, Noble focused on the respective crews over the iron when making his decisions.
The Company has always valued its people above anything else.1932
Samedan Oil Corporation
In 1932 Lloyd Noble diversified into oil production to complement the drilling side of the business and to operate the producing properties he had acquired during his first decade of operations. The producing Company was named Samedan Oil Corporation in tribute to his three children, Sam, Ed, and Ann and subsequently renamed Noble Energy.1940s
A Helping Hand
Noble was called to help the war effort by drilling in England’s Sherwood Forest to increase their domestic production.1940s
Cape Hatteras Island, North Carolina
Back on U.S. soil, Noble drilled the first well off the Atlantic coast in Cape Hatteras Island, North Carolina.1950

Upon his death in 1950, Lloyd Noble’s interests in Noble Drilling and Samedan* were transferred to The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, a charitable foundation Lloyd Noble had formed in 1945. The two companies operated as wholly owned subsidiaries of the Noble Foundation until the late 1960s.
*Samedan became Noble Energy, which was ultimately acquired by Chevron in October 20201950s
Bay Marchand, Louisiana
In the early 1950s, Noble Drilling became the first company to drill offshore using electrical power from shore in Bay Marchand off Louisiana.1960s and 1970s
Noble’s first public stock offering
Noble formed an employee newsletter that was in publication through 2017 to provide a sense of unity to the organization.
During the 1970s Noble’s first public stock offering was issued under the ticker NOBL.1980s
Noble Ed Holt and the Noble Sam Noble
In 1981 Noble embarked on its first newbuild campaign, constructing the Noble Ed Holt and the Noble Sam Noble – two rigs that served with distinction.1990s
Noble’s EVA upgrade program
During the late 1990s, Noble’s EVA upgrade program transformed 5 rigs that were limited to working in up to 70’ of water or less, to units capable of operating in water depths of 6,000’ and greater.
By the end of 1997, Noble’s fleet included 45 rigs.2000s
New Build Expansion
Noble invested in growing its fleet by seven units, including three high specification jackups and four ultra deepwater semisubmersibles.2010s
Addition of high specification assets
From the decade spanning 2010-2020, Noble augmented the fleet through the addition of high specification assets and the development of a strategic alternative for many existing standard specification assets transitioning Noble to the oldest contractor with one of the youngest and most advanced fleets. This included 17 new rigs to the fleet through acquisition and new builds and the departure of 34 jackups, 5 drillships, and 3 semisubmersibles rigs to Paragon Offshore.2021
Noble acquired Pacific Drilling
In 2021, Noble acquired Pacific Drilling, whose high specification ultra-deepwater drillship fleet further enhanced Noble’s global position as an owner and operator of one of the most modern and technically advanced fleets.2022
Noble merged with Maersk Drilling
Then in 2022, Noble merged with Maersk Drilling to create a world-class offshore driller with more than 150 years of combined experience. The merger brought together two companies with complementary core values, an unwavering commitment to safety, and a strong track record of operational excellence to create unmatched expertise and product offering in deepwater and harsh environment drilling.
